DAY 75, MATTHEW 13-14

Key Verse: 14:27  But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
Read Key Passage:  Matthew 14:22-32

Reflection:

Have you ever seen a storm?  Sometimes there is lightning and thunder and rain, and maybe the wind is so strong that trees or other things are blown down!  During a storm, we just want to go to a safe place until it is over.  At the end of one busy day in the Bible, Jesus told His disciples to go in a boat to the other side of a big lake, while He stayed behind.  But when it was nighttime and the disciples were far away from the land, a big storm came up.  The wind and water were blowing so hard, and the disciples were in trouble because their boat might wreck in a bad storm like this one.  They probably didn’t know it, but Jesus knew about that storm they were in.  And in the middle of the night, He left the land and went to them – but He was walking on top of the water!  That’s a miracle, something only God can do.  It was so dark, and they had never seen anyone walk on water.  Neither have I!  When they saw Him they didn’t know who it was and they were afraid!  But He said, “It is I; be not afraid.”  And He even helped Peter walk on top of the water!  When Peter stopped trusting Jesus and looked at the storm instead, he started to go down in the water.  What do you think Jesus did?  Yes, He saved him!  Then Jesus and Peter got in the boat together and the wind just stopped; the storm was over.

When we read the Bible we should always apply to our lives the lessons that we learn.  Applying scripture is how God’s Word begins to change us!!
Application:

Grace:  It’s good to trust in the Lord.  (Even in storms and at night?)  Yes.  He is stronger than us, and He can take care of us and watch over us, and when we’re sad we can just think about Him.

Margie:  We may not realize it, but Jesus always knows when we are in the middle of a storm.  If that’s what it takes, He can walk on water to come to us.  And when He asks us to trust Him, we can.  As 5-year-old Grace knows, “He is stronger than us.  He can take care of us.”  And our small faith doesn’t change His power or His care for us.  In His time, He will still stretch out His hand, grab us, take us back to the boat, and stop the storm.  And then…the sun comes up! J

Review Questions:

What miracle did Jesus do in this story?

Who did Jesus help to walk on the water?

What happened when Peter stopped trusting Jesus?

Who was the extra person in the boat when the storm ended?
